Zoonotic strains of MRSA |
The first meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains appeared in the early 1960s after the introduction of semisynthetic penicillins such as methicillin, stable against staphylococcal β-lactamases. The first reports of MRSA strains in cattle were made in Belgium in 1972. MRSA strains have also been identified in other animals. Staphylococcus aureus clonal complex 398 (CC398), discovered in the early 21st century, was soon isolated as a cause of human infections associated with livestock farming. The main reservoir of Staphylococcus aureus associated with livestock LA-MRSA CC 398 is primarily pigs, and to a lesser extent poultry and cattle. In general, the zoonotic exchange of MRSA between humans and animals has a significant impact on the epidemiology of MRSA. In our opinion, screening tests for MRSA detection should be introduced into standard veterinary diagnostics in Poland. |
